A graceful trio of Continental European pewter ewers, comprising one tall 7-inch vessel and two smaller 4-inch companions. Each is shaped in the classical tradition, with a pedestal foot, rounded body, elegantly flared pouring lip, and wonderfully expressive scrolling handle.
The bases bear a worn figural angel-style mark, a motif associated with the Continental European Engelmarke tradition used to signify quality pewter. Unlike the regulated hallmarking system used for precious metals, pewter marks varied considerably among regions and makers, and the surviving mark on these pieces is not distinct enough to confidently identify a particular workshop.
Their softly aged surfaces show layers of patina, oxidation, scratches, darkened areas, and other evidence of use. Rather than diminishing the group, that time-worn character gives the pewter the quiet presence that makes old European metalware so appealing.
Displayed together, the contrast in scale makes the three ewers especially sculptural—a handsome addition to a collected table, mantel, or cabinet.
