Vintage Italian Capodimonte-Style Bacchus Figural Lidded Urn – Model 1632/2

A spectacular vintage Italian figural urn, lavishly modeled and hand-painted in the exuberant tradition of Capodimonte decorative porcelain.

The commanding design centers on a highly dimensional Bacchus-inspired mask, complete with a sweeping green mustache and elaborate foliate headdress. Surrounding the figure is an extraordinary continuous scene of sculpted classical figures and putti nestled among fruit, foliage, trees, and rocky landscape elements. The extensive relief work gives the vessel remarkable depth, with the decoration appearing almost sculpted around the body rather than simply applied to its surface.

The fitted domed lid continues the decoration with hand-painted pink, green, ochre, and burgundy foliate motifs, finished with warm gilt-colored accents and a sculptural finial. The combination of classical imagery, theatrical modeling, and rich polychrome decoration gives the piece the unmistakable character of Italian Baroque and Rococo Revival decorative ceramics.

The underside is marked “1632/2 ITALY.” Research of comparable Italian pieces indicates that 1632/2 is best interpreted as a model or production designation.
